Description: - The buffer boundaries have been based on a 5km proximity to storages and major run-of-river supply systems, and a 1km proximity to major tributary waterways feeding both of these. The Logan, Mary and Mid-Brisbane River systems have been afforded the same protection as storages due to the severely degraded water quality on these rivers coupled with the direct sourcing strategies from these systems to critical / major water treatment plants (Beaudesert WTP, Noosa WTP and the 2 Mt Crosby WTPs respectively). The buffer around the Mid-Brisbane River is particularly critical due to the steady and alarming decline in this system and the fact that it supplies over 50% of SEQ's total urban water via the two Mt Crosby WTPs. Generally the approach to the buffer mapping has been based on the relative risk of catchments or criticality of treatment assets, as supported by Seqwater's various internal processes and information (i.e. risk assessments, water quality sampling / monitoring results, catchment and WTP scorecards etc)- The buffers by no means cover the full extent of the catchment areas for SEQ's storages and run-of-river systems and are considered to represent the area of highest influence to water quality. The buffers have been reduced so as to prevent unreasonable and / or too extensive implications for development across SEQ. This was done in line with DSDIP's advice, and in conjunction with the triggers defined and assessment under the Seqwater Guidelines, It is also noted that a number of catchments which were felt to be of lower risk, or soon to be decomissioned. The mapping of the Mary River is not related to the Traveston, but the Mary River Intake which exists at the northern-most point of the buffer boundaries and supplies the Noosa (Lake Macdonald) WTP directly via pipeline.
